Abstract
This article is a comparative historical exploration of how commercial hip-hop has impacted the advocacy for disenfranchised groups in the United States and Brazil. This research draws upon primary sources, a careful review of the literature, personal interviews, and site visits and analysis of lyrics and music video content. This focus will briefly examine the history of hip-hop in America and its influence on Brazil. This research will provide comparative information regarding the emergence and evolution of the hip-hop culture as a creative and constructive voice for the Afro-American and Afro-Brazilian communities. A comparative examination will explore hip-hop as a vehicle to advocate for the disenfranchised in both America and Brazil. A presentation of hip-hop and rap lyrics will also be presented to highlight the differences in content and purpose. Further it will demonstrate how the profiting of the commercialization of American hip-hop has polluted the original and positive message of hip-hop and replaced it with negative stereotypes.
