Abstract

This paper is an examination of the leadership and administrative approaches of principals in a set of California’s public elementary schools. This research focuses on the 39 principals working in Californian public elementary schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as “Blue Ribbon Schools”. It is a descriptive study of principals’ values and beliefs and what they envision as a principal’s role in achieving excellence in education. This project also offers insight into the politics of school reform, contemporary approaches to reform in California, history of the principalship, overview of research methods, comments on the Blue ribbon school program and prospects for further research. This project also provides a description of Blue Ribbon School Program, a list of Blue Ribbon schools in California, Questionnaire Instrument, Questionnaire Codebook, and Handout from Senior Symposium.
