Abstract
This project provides analysis of Whittier Uptown youth culture among males who use media, such as means of mass communication including radio, television, and video games. This study took place from winter 2005 to spring 2006. Research includes interviewing 10 males between the ages 18-24 to examine how they have used different forms of art and media to construct their identities. This project begins with a historical narrative of youth culture identities and how identity has been traditionally viewed by the “mainstream”, and how identity is constructed in the context of the social construction of youth culture of Uptown Whittier. There is also examination of subcultural identity that speaks about how mass media is consumed and also “virtual identities” which are constructed online, as part of a social networking website. This project also examines consumerism and how selective identities are “bought” through personal style to become a member of subculture. Included in this research are various field notes from participant observations such as different stores which offer lifestyle materials to members of the youth culture. Lastly the concept of “personal style” is discussed while looking at different forms of media and art, and more specifically music.
