Abstract

I like to think of my senior project as a reflection of what I think my education at Whittier College has been about. In having to come up with a project that would allow me to synthesize my education, culture, and interest in creative writing, I have decided to focus on something that would allow me to reflect upon my family and ultimately myself. I have always been very much inspired by my grandmother, Margarita Gomez. Hearing the stories of her youth in El Salvador and her struggles in this country as an immigrant has been a big part of my life and my heritage. This heritage is something that I have not always been ready to accept or admit. However, throughout the course of my studies, my grandmother’s voice is one that I have come to appreciate. I have realized that she is someone whose life says something about struggle, culture, individuality, society, and life. Because of this, I have dedicated my senior project to conveying her story. This project, inessence, is a narrative that explores the events and circumstances that have helped shape her identity. Here the memories of her childhood and adolescent years are dispersed among memories of her adults life up to her present. This project has offered her a chance to think about what her life has been about and how certain things have affected the way in which she sees herself and the world around her.
