Abstract

It is undeniable that fashion and culture are interrelated. Through an investigation and analysis of Hip-hop fashion ad culture in Los Angeles I am studying the ways in which cultural ideals, identities, resources and such play a role in the creation and production of fashion. Hip-hop is an American sub-culture that began and has been changing in the last thirty years. In exploring the foundations and evolution of Hip-hop I am looking at gender roles, race and ethnic associations, and social ideals and issues representative of Hip-hop culture; and how fashion serves as a visual dialogue of such examples. I am doing this primarily through visual analysis and interpretation through the artistic process, creating a body of work that is reflective of these ideas. The theoretical backbone of this project is further supported through a written component.
