Abstract

This project consists of two elements: 1) the actual handmade articles of clothing that were created, and 2) the portfolio being presented. With respect to the former, four articles of clothing were made-- a coat, a dress, a pair of pants, and a top-- by hand and by myself over the period of 6 months. Speaking of the latter, the portfolio consists of inspiration images, my initial concept sketches, my final sketches, as well as images of the clothing throughout the stages of their creation. In terms of its development, I had to learn how to sew, along with other necessary techniques, while going through the process of making these clothes. It was as much an educational experience as it was a creative one. All these works came from a shared source of inspiration which was my mother and memories we shared. She passed away in the January of 2019 and the flood of emotions that follow such a loss definitely impacted the way I designed, and my creative process as a whole. On a technical level, these clothes were made through both hand-stitching and machine sewing. They were not made in any particular order, instead all being worked on concurrently. While the articles of clothing I made will be shown at my presentation, they will ultimately remain in my possession which is why I created the portfolio. The portfolio consists not only of visual records of the completed works, but also provides insight into the entire process by showing the various iteration of my sketches as well as images that inspired me and my looks. This was an emotional and stressful process, but the final product is a collection of clothes that I am proud to have made.
