Abstract
This senior project is a research paper analyzing the change in jurisprudence with regards to the 1st amendment. Within this paper I will examine several issues involving freedom of expression. Firstly, I will give a brief overview of why freedom of speech is so very important to the American political system. Secondly, I will examine how the jurisprudence of the court has developed in regard to the first amendment. Thirdly, how in the past has the court developed its jurisprudence to deal with expression: i.e. United States v. O’Brien (1968). Fifthly, do these recent decisions by the supreme court signal a movement toward lower standards of scrutiny for all speech: i.e. Boos v. Barry (1988).
