Abstract
The purpose of this literature review is to understand and analyze how private colleges demonstrate an implement diversity within their campuses. The topics within this senior project include understanding the reasons and struggles of implementing diversity, understanding how diversity is defined within these institutions, analyzing the benefits has on its students and faculty, examining the actual commitments institutions are placing to implement and to advocate for diversity, and finally conducting analysis that will follow an understanding how private and liberal arts are incorporating diversity. In this literature review, nine different private liberal arts colleges from three different regions were chooses in order to analyze their mission statement, their student and faculty demographics, and how these institutions are advocating and implementing diversity through the use of specific programs or events. The names of nine institutions will not be provided in the research, but they will be distinguished through the use of specific labeling. In order to compare and understand how diverse these colleges are, a non bias rubric was developed through the use of multiple sources that allow me to analyze how an institution practices diversity. The findings of this study indicate that implementing cultural diversity as a benchmark for private or liberal institutions is a beneficial as it represents opportunities for students to interact with multiple backgrounds while maintaining and increasing an inclusive, diverse and well represented environment for its students and faculty.
