Abstract

This work could be called a performance piece and video installation, which for me, means that it is not a Play. There is no plot, no character development, and no dialogue in the traditional theatrical sense. I am attempting to tell a narrative through visual poetry, gestures, and sounds. I am by no means working to dictate meanings to the audience. Instead, I hope the audience will draw their own connections and meanings The audience is a translator of events just like the artist. There is no hierarchy of who is telling the story. Since the nature of the piece is ultimately about the deconstruction of texts and of the self, the integrity of the piece lies in its transitory nature. The beauty of performance and installation art is that it can not be preserved. Even when it is accessible, each encounter is unique. This work also includes a section on poetry as well as a production journal/sketchbook that further elaborates on the author’s process of thinking and planning with concern to this project. The performance aspect of this project is spoken in Chinese and includes various nods to Chinese culture and tradition; moreover, the poetry is written in both English and Chinese characters.
