Abstract

The purpose of this project is to engage with the gay community from another country and to channel my understandings into an original art piece, a collage. A primary focus of this project is to understand the gay community in Buenos Aires, Argentina to gain insight into the culture that gay men are living in this country. The project uses my first-hand experiences as I interviewed many gay men in Buenos Aires so that I can learn about how the idea of being a gay man functions in this society. From this study, I learned that the Latin American views on the term gay is different that the American version of the term. In Latin America, there is machismo which is a latin version of manly pride. The idea of being gay only applies to men who have been penetrated. Thus, men who engage in gay sex but who are not penetrated anally are not considered gay in Buenos Aires. The differences in the gay culture from this country led me to create a collage that highlights the gay culture in America.
