Abstract
This paper will examine the theory of transitional justice and its mechanisms. With an understanding of the theory, one can explore its application through a case study. The case study in this paper will be the South African Truth and reconciliation Commission (TRC). I will explore the South African TRC as a mechanism of transitional and restorative justice in post- Apartheid South Africa. By looking at a case study, one can gain a better understanding of how the theory works in reality. Many scholars have attempted to argue whether or not the South African TRC was a success; it would be naive to attempt this. Instead, I will simply look at the South African TRC as an application of transitional justice theory and explain how difficult it can be to judge the TRC simply as a success or a failure.
