Abstract

Globalization and information technology are fueling radical changes in how U.S. firms outsource and manage supply chains in emerging markets. Outsourcing, once limited to low-skill jobs have moved up the supply chain and into professional tasks and even research and development. Innovation is the bedrock of the United States economy and the outsourcing of innovation poses significant threats to the U.S. competitiveness. On a micro-economic scale, firms much have a tactical approach to outsourcing without jeopardizing their strategic goals. Domestically, the U.S. is not adequately providing its youth with sufficient education or its citizens with a defined position on the economic implications of globalization. If companies intend to remain competitive, outsourcing is a must. A list of best practices used must be utilized in order to both protect and exploit intellectual property.
