Abstract

This project presents ideas about intellectual development. This study also proposes an alternative to traditional views of music education based on these theories and how popular and folk music work in the same manner as agents of intellectual development. The study then gives a brief account of the History of Music Education in America, its most characteristic moments, how it has influenced its actual condition, and finally an analysis of some of the issues that music educators and scholars confront i.e. pop music versus classical and the multiculturalist approach. The second part and design of this project considers the Los Angeles Music and art and design School situated in East Los Angeles, and presents specific functions and the general characteristics of their work including interviews of teachers, statements from parents, and both current and former students.
