Abstract

Did you know Dating and meeting potential partners is an important part of society because it is the way society continues evolving. As social beings it is a necessary part of the life course of most individuals. beings. Dating is the act of meeting someone in person and engaging in a romantic relationship, however, the culture of dating has shifted due to the introduction of social media and online dating apps. The previous research focuses on the culture of traditional dating with a sparse amount of research on dating violence and safety for dating apps. Researchers have concentrated on the shift that has occurred from traditional dating to online dating. The variables researchers argue that are important to understand in the dating experience are racial sexism, racial stereotypes, homophobia, microaggressions and heterosexism. Researchers argue that white heteronormativity forms the basis for the experiences of most individuals who date and is particularly troubling for People of Color (Poc)individuals and those who identify as LGBTQ+. The focus of my research is to understand the reality and shift of online dating and how traditional dating factors do play a role with this shaping of online dating. I used mixed methods which consisted of 41 survey responses and 3 interviews. These surveys and interviews were conducted to compare and contrast the shift of dating culture and assess the extent to which white heteronormativity along with the other variables impact the dating experience. From the three charts that I examined, about more than half of the individuals say that they have experienced microaggressions and stereotypes due to their race and or ethnicity.
