Abstract
This project is a close analysis of Zhao Ziyang’s opening speech to the Community Party of China during the Thirteenth National Congress held in 1987 as an outline for issues deemed most crucial to China’s future. This study also includes personal anecdotes from living in China while also providing historical background of the People’s Republic since 1949 under Mao Zedong, comparing political and economic policies to demonstrate China’s progress toward modernization. This study includes the evolution of Chinese leadership, the 13th National Congress, and China’s economy.
