Abstract
This project begins with historical context of British control of Penang including details of the American Revolutionary War and how the British developed their colonies. Overall, this project is a case study of Malaya and its journey to independence. This project is split into sections that discusses how Malaya become under British control, descriptions of Malayan peasants, war within Malaya and how the colony became under Japanese control. The next sections describe British post-war re-construction which includes collecting food, restoration of medical and health facilities, and reestablishment of schools. Also discussed are details of how Malaya obtained independence, problems with self-governing, and the Communist insurrection in Malaya. This project concludes with an appendix entitled “An Afterthought: ‘The Chinese Immigrant’” which consists of a few narratives and also includes a hand drawn map of the Malaya peninsula with the Straits Settlements highlighted.
