Abstract

This project is a research paper that documents anatomical brain differences between males and females as well as analyzes historical scientific hypotheses and findings concerning the human brain. “The goal of this project was to originally to study and document the structural and functional differences between male and female brains, and any philosophical implications, it has expanded into more of an overview of the general topic of biological sex differences. The more I researched, the more I realized that there are many factors related to this topic that are too important to be ignored, even though their involvement in actual structural or functional brain differences may only be a small part of their overall physiological role. I also ran into the problem of trying to explain a complex physiological theory without having mentioned the structures or functions involved. Therefore, I have included a section on the anatomy of the brain and its subdivisions (including appropriate diagrams), and brain development. So as to keep the reader open minded to the fact that there are many ways to explore biological sex differences, part of the text is devoted to outlining some of these. The section on the history of the study of sex differences has been included mainly because I found it both fascinating and unbelievable that research could be powered so much by the desire to scientifically prove opinions and values, instead of allowing such judgements to be fueled by experimental results.”
