Abstract

This project is a research paper on media reporting and the free press, specifically on journalists in El Salvador. The paper begins by discussing a brief history on the media and its role in the United States government. The author follows this up by discussing the history of El Salvador beginning with the revolution in 1979. Furthermore, the author makes many parallels between the media reporting from the Vietnam war to the situation in El Salvador. The newspapers are filled with conflicting stories and over exaggerations. The issue of why the media is not fully reporting the truth is discussed as the author mentions the US has alternative motives and the journalists sent to El Salvador have very little experience. Furthermore, the author mentions the different types of reporting and the differences between them. The author mentions how some television reportings are staged in order to change public opinion. There is a history of distrust in politicians and reporters would rely on outside sources instead. This soon became dangerous as journalists began to get murdered. The author provides different newspaper clippings that discuss various assassinations. Additionally, the paper mentions various correspondents who have been imprisoned in the country they are reporting on.
