Abstract
When I first began thinking about what type of project I would like to do, I realized that I definitely wanted to conduct an action oriented project instead of a research paper. I felt that since this project would consume much of my time and effort, I wanted some group of people to benefit from my hard work. Based on that foundation, I got into contact with Claudia Dorrington of the Social Work Department and explained to her my feelings and ideas. She in turn put me into contact with Ted Knoll, the director of First Day Coalition, a transitional living facility in Whittier, CA. After this meeting, I walked away knowing that I wanted to focus on doing something for First Day and the residents who live there. Next, I gathered all of my business knowledge from my four years of study, and I came up with the idea to hold a fundraiser in which the students on campus were targeted. Using the knowledge of business concepts that are further explained, I put together a fundraiser at Memories, a bar and club in Uptown Whittier, for students ages 18 and up. The proceeds of this event were to go to the residents’ activity fund and put towards an ice machine so that the ice could be used for cold drinks since the kitchen is locked at 8pm and also used to make a salad bar for lunch and dinner. When it came to planning this project, I aced as though the event was a small business and went through all the steps that applied to my project that a business owner would when starting up a company. The important business ideas that I considered and steps I took in creating this project are explained in detail below.
