Abstract

My research looks at the ways these videos are made and the formula behind them. I seek to understand two aspects of the making of a serious Buzzfeed video: the technical elements that drive it’s narrative and the way it responds to the world. These two elements are the most interesting as they cement the difference between fun videos and the serious. My project will compile the BuzzFeed videos of a serious nature released over the 2016 paper. For the purposes of this project I will only be drawing videos from the BuzzFeed video flagship channel and the BuzzFeed Yellow channel. After creating a catalog of videos, I will watch each one and begin to identify trends in them all. I believe these trends will be important markers in understanding the way BuzzFeed taps into the emotions of its viewers and drives their narrative. The filmic elements I will be analyzing are the lighting, sound, visual text, camera angle, background, and cast. Not only will these elements be examined, but this study will also identify trends of these different elements over the various videos. Finding trends within the usage of these elements creates a better understanding what has been successful with the BuzzFeed video in connecting deeply to its audience.
