Abstract
This project is a research paper analyzing how certain factors, such as economic and population growth, in Merced County affect the wetlands preservation and essentially paints the struggle between those who want to preserve the wetlands and even return land back to the wetlands, and the major organizations in Merced county who wish to spur economic growth. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the conflict surrounding wetland preservation and reclamation of Merced county. First, this paper will discuss the function of the wetlands. Second, this paper will discuss the water history of Merced county. Third, this paper will discuss the federal government’s attempt to create a definitive national policy on wetlands. Fourth, this paper will discuss the major groups in Merced county and their attempts at creating public policy. Finally, a discussion of the choices facing Merced county will conclude this paper. Moreover, this study is also comprised of a number of interviews done in the Central Valley of California, Sacramento (the state capital), and in Hackettstown, New Jersey that all relate to this issue
