Abstract
The goal of this study was to examine the ecological role of coyotes in the Whittier Hills through dietary analyses and field observations. The Whittier Hills were selected because of the urban environment and very disturbed habitat, thus providing interesting information on the urban coyote and concerns over household pets thought to be lost by coyotes….the current study is attempting to identify any shifts in diet over the year, and relate this to previous studies. This study is also examining the role of domestic animals in the coyote diet and the extent to which the coyotes utilize domestic animals. Thus, these data will provide a view of the food habits of the coyotes of the Whittier Hills and the importance of their roles there. These data may also provide information for calculating the carrying capacity of the habitat, and also further efforts to create a better relationship with the coyote (especially regarding the taking of household pets).
