Abstract

This project will dive into the realm of sustainable homes or as it’s more commonly known, “Green Homes. The idea of building sustainable homes and structures in general is not a new concept in here Los Angeles, California, but with the consistent rise in population and the wide demographic held here in Los Angeles County, some folks are being left to conventional and environmentally detrimental homes. This project will begin with a brief overview of the history and current use of energy in the housing sector, then into the basis of sustainable building. Following this will be the topic of energy usage in Los Angeles as well as the current state of sustainable homes in the region. A major discussion will be the role of the United States Green Building Council’s LEED certification program and how this incentive program is really making an impact in the Los Angeles green home market. In addition to these topic, there will be discussion and analysis of the trades of building sustainably as opposed to conventionally. These trade offs will be aligned with three pillars: economic benefits, health benefits, and environmental benefits. And to end the project will be possible additions to the established green home design plans for Los Angeles. These will be taken from case studies from around the world. With this information provided, the hope is that the audience will be persuaded to move to a sustainable future through the use of a green home or green retrofitted home.
