Abstract
This is more than a senior project. It is also a personal exploration of America itself, a redefinition of terms, and an intellectual odyssey into the strange world of academic discourse. To complete this project, I have had to ask myself hard questions about America and what it means to me, about what I think someone should know to truly understand America, about my place in the Whittier College community and my educational philosophy for that community, and about where, if anywhere, I fit into the realm of professional academic discourse. After journeys across physical space, to Baltimore for the American Studies Association’s annual meeting in November of 1991, and intellectual space, deep into the philosophical core of American studies, I am ready to tell my tale, and present my findings in the form of a curriculum for Whittier’s own American Studies program. Armed with my new information, I intend to respond to the entire field on behalf of Whittier College by devising a program that will clearly state its goal and purpose, and will finally, formally place the college in what has been international academic discourse for close to fifty years.
